Laser Hair Removal in Indianapolis, Indiana

Constantly dealing with unwanted hair can be incredibly tedious. For many people, repetitive shaving, waxing and plucking is a chore they can do without. A growing number of Indianapolis residents are turning to laser hair removal as a long-term hair removal method. During this treatment at Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery, located in Carmel and Greenwood, Indiana, gentle laser energy disables the hair follicles, stopping them from producing hair.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that uses a pulsating light beam to remove hair that is unwanted from all regions of the body. It works by using a very precise laser beam that moves throughout the skin and focuses on individual hair follicles. This laser energy destroys the actual hair follicle, preventing the growth of hair at its source.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost in Indianapolis, Indiana?

Since most insurance companies consider treatments such as laser hair removal to be elective, they do not normally cover their cost. How much your treatment will cost will vary based upon the size of the treatment area. Patients typically require from four to eight treatments for the best long-term results. We accept cash, checks and credit cards.

Is Laser Hair Removal Right For Me?

Laser hair removal is safe and effective for almost every part of the body. Popular areas for the treatment include the legs, chest, armpits and bikini lines. It is also considered safe for use on the upper lip and facial hair.

Dark pigments in hair absorb the light wavelength emitted by the laser. So this treatment method works best for those with light skin and dark, coarse hair. It is ineffective for those with light “peach fuzz” hair. If you are an adult in good health, you should make a good candidate for laser hair removal.

How Involved Is The Laser Hair Removal Procedure?

Laser hair removal, or photoepilation, is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require anesthesia or incisions. The day before your treatment, you should shave the area requiring hair removal, but do not pluck or wax the hair for three or four weeks.

You will be required to wear protective eye gear during your procedure. A handheld laser device will then be placed against your skin. Laser energy pulses will be delivered to the target area. Some people describe the sensation as similar to the snapping of a rubber band. After the skin has absorbed the laser energy, it is transformed into heat energy that destroys the unwanted hair follicle. The treatment may take anywhere from a few minutes to one hour, depending upon the size of the area to be treated.

One key point is that laser hair removal only works on hair that is actively growing. Hair growth occurs in phases, some hair follicles are producing hair while others are dormant. This is why several sessions are necessary in order to treat hair follicles that are in an active phase. Patients typically undergo from four to eight procedures, spaced about seven weeks apart.

How Long Is The Recovery After Laser Hair Removal?

Following your treatment, your skin may appear swollen and red. Existing hair will start falling out over the course of the following weeks. You should plan another session in approximately six weeks to target those hair follicles that were inactive during your previous treatment. The amount of hair in the targeted area will diminish further after each subsequent session.
