Kybella® in Indianapolis, Indiana

Do you have extra skin or fat below your chin? As we age, our bodies aren’t as efficient in processing fat, often resulting in a double chin. Kybella®, created to help eliminate chin fat, is available for the residents of Indianapolis, Indiana at Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery, located in Carmel and Greenwood.

What Is Kybella®?

Kybella® is a simple, non-surgical injectable procedure designed to improve the appearance of extra fat under the chin, often known as a double chin. It is the only FDA-approved treatment that targets the fat cells under the chin.

Kybella® is identical to a chemical that the human body naturally produces, called deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid helps to absorb fat. Kybella® works by destroying fat cells. Once those cells are destroyed, those cells will no longer store fat. This means they cannot gain back the fat they previously held, making Kybella® an extremely effective treatment.

The course of treatment for Kybella® is spread across several sessions that span over several months. It is a quick procedure with relatively few side effects and risks.

Why Choose Kybella®?

Kybella® is a non-surgical solution to a cosmetic problem. Gone are the days of needing liposuction or surgery to remove chin fat. Kybella® destroys fat cells, literally eliminating the dreaded double chin.

One of the reasons people seek out Kybella® in Indianapolis is for an increased sense of self-esteem. While a double chin may seem like a small thing, 80 percent of people who have a double chin would like to be rid of it. By rejuvenating the facial profile and eliminating an aspect of themselves they viewed negatively, people feel better about themselves as a whole after the Kybella® procedure.

Having extra fat under your chin and at the top of your neck can affect your day-to-day life. It causes self-consciousness, may be uncomfortable and can get in the way when doing certain activities, such as playing the violin, golfing or reading. It is a common problem and there is now a non-surgical solution for it.

The Kybella® Treatment

Anywhere from 12-20 injections are given to the target region during a single session. For most people, two to three visits at Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery in Indianapolis spaced a month apart are necessary for maximum efficacy. Each session takes approximately 15 minutes. From the start of the appointment to end of the appointment, an average of an hour was spent with the doctor administering the Kybella® treatment at Dr. Hamilton’s practice in Indianapolis.

Your Kybella® experience will be customized by you and Dr. Hamilton. The number of sessions and the number of injections is adjusted to tailor to your anatomy and your goals.

Procedures are done here in the office in a comfortable reclining chair. A local anesthetic will be administered to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Post-procedure, you might be asked to wait in the office for several minutes so that Dr. Hamilton can be sure you aren’t experiencing any adverse side-effects, namely swelling on nerve weakness.

What Should Be Expected After Kybella® Treatment?

Pain, numbness, swelling, redness and bruising are all to be expected after a Kybella® treatment. There may also be some areas that are hard to the touch. The session itself doesn’t take very long and you will be able to resume your daily life activities without much trouble. You will need to keep an eye out for facial muscle weakness and any asymmetry in your smile.

It typically takes two to four treatment sessions before patients begin to notice a difference in their chin profile. The main thing you can do post-surgery is be patient. It will take time for the swelling to go down so that you can appreciate your results.

If the treatment is done properly by a trained facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Hamilton, Kybella® only targets fat cells. However, there may be some excess skin under the chin post-procedure that would only be removed via skin tightening procedures.

The main concern is trauma to the mandibular facial nerve. If the treatment is injected too close to the mandibular nerve, facial muscle weakness and an asymmetrical smile are potential outcomes. Dr. Hamilton will carefully mark out and avoid this area to prevent this potential but uncommon complication. In rare cases, Kybella® can also cause trouble swallowing.

Are You A Candidate For Kybella®?

More than 80 percent of people with a double chin dislike or are bothered by it. If you have a double chin that you are unhappy with Kybella® is worth considering.

However, if you have an infection under your chin, you should not undergo Kybella® treatment.

If you have a known bleeding or clotting condition or are being treated with anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy, it is not recommended you receive Kybella®, as you might experience excessive bruising or bleeding.

If you have had past surgeries on your chin or neck, you may not be able to receive Kybella® treatment.

If you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant or are breastfeeding, it is advised that you do not get Kybella®. Currently, it is unknown whether or not Kybella® can harm unborn infants or be transferred through breast milk.

At your initial consultation it is recommended that you check with Dr. Hamilton as to whether or not any medications you are currently taking have a potential of reacting to Kybella®. Ultimately, only you and Dr. Hamilton can determine if Kybella® is the right course of action for you.

How Long Will Kybella® Treatment Last?

The procedure takes place during several sessions over the span of several months. The treatment is a relatively permanent solution. Because it works by destroying fat cells, the affected cells no longer store or accumulate more fat.

What Can I Expect After Kybella® Treatment?

Localized swelling, some discomfort, bruising, hematoma, redness, hardness and numbness are all common side effects of Kybella®. Many patients experience only a couple of these side effects, not all of them. A few only cited tenderness in the treatment area rather than pain.

Seeing as the procedure takes several sessions for full efficacy, you will not notice dramatic results after your first session. After the second or fourth session, most patients noticed a reduction in their chin fat.

Most patients can appreciate a visible improvement after the second treatment and many will not need a third session.

Like any injection, healing time varies patient to patient. You may notice the swelling going down after a couple of days or up to a couple of weeks.

Gently massaging the treatment area several times a day can help relieve any tightness and swelling.

How Soon Can I Return To Work After Kybella®?

You can return to work as soon as you feel comfortable. The procedure requires localized anesthetic, so if you need to go back to work after your treatment session, you can do so.

Seeing as the Kybella® treatments are spaced over several months, you may need to plan ahead to be sure you can get time off work to attend each individual session.
