MICRODERMABRASION: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Plastic Surgery in Indianapolis, IN

When considering a clinical skin care treatment that will exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin, two methods come to mind: a chemical peel and microdermabrasion. Both are effective and safe treatments that can provide the skin with a refreshed, invigorated appearance. But how does a patient choose between them? Discover the real differences between two of the most requestedskin care procedures today.

HOW DOES A CHEMICAL PEEL WORK?

During a chemical peel, a licensed aesthetician or skincare professional applies a specialized, formulated chemical solution to your skin. Typically, this procedure is performed on the face but it may also be used to treat the skin on the neck and hands. It is a noninvasive procedure that improves the appearance of the skin by exfoliating dead cells, lightening the tone, and minimizing discolorations and unevenness. It can also be used to treat specific problems including acne and acne scars, age and liver spots, fine lines and wrinkles, freckles, rough skin, scaly patches, sun-damaged skin, and other irregularities in skin pigmentation.

For your treatment, your clinician will begin by thoroughly cleansing your skin. Next, the chemical peel will be applied. It may contain either one or more chemical solutions, including glycolic acid, tricholoracetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, and carbolic acid (phenol). Following the procedure, it is common to experience a burning sensation lasting only five to 10  minutes, then replaced by a stinging sensation. Cold compresses can help you manage discomfort and alleviate any swelling. If you have received a deeper chemical peel, your doctor may prescribe pain medication to ease discomfort and stinging in the area.

HOW DOES MICRODERMABRASION WORK?

Microdermabrasion is a different skincare treatment that can provide deep exfoliation and healthy results for the skin. The Diamond-Tome Microdermabrasion version of this procedure is performed with a vacuum and diamond-tips to smooth and exfoliate dead skin cells. Like a chemical peel, microdermabrasion can treat many specific skincare concerns. Microdermabrasion is a safe procedure for people of all skin types and tones. It is an effective treatment for common problems including deep scars, wrinkles, and even acne scars.

After your treatment, it is typical for your skin to be reddened and appear slightly pink. This will take about 24 hours to go away without intervention. Microdermabrasion will not cause any scars, does not require anesthetic, and will not make changes to your skin tone and color.

HOW CAN I TELL WHICH IS RIGHT FOR ME?

An ideal candidate for a chemical peel is fair-skinned and light-haired. Those with darker skin can still get good results, based on the problem they are treating, but chemical peels can cause uneven skin tone for these patients. If you are looking for a solution to sagging skin, fat deposits, or severe wrinkles, you may have better luck with a surgical treatment, such as a facelift.

If you’re considering microdermabrasion, you might be a good candidate for this treatment if you are looking for a way to reduce or eliminate certain skin concerns. Microdermabrasion is an effective treatment against fine lines and wrinkles, clogged pores, uneven skin tone, deep scars containing pigment, acne breakouts, and scars. Unfortunately, given the nature of the procedure, not all patients are able to receive microdermabrasion treatment, including those with active rosacea, delicate capillaries, vascular lesions, widespread acne that is active, herpetic lesions or cold sores, warts on the treatment area, open sores or cuts, psoriasis, lupus, erythematosus, or diabetes mellitus.

Every patient is different and each one has a unique medical history, list of skin concerns, and desired results from their own procedure. To best determine your eligibility for either a chemical peel, microdermabrasion, or both, discuss your options openly with your doctor during your initial consultation.
