Why is PRP growing in popularity?

PRP Therapy in Indianapolis, INPlatelet Rich Plasma or PRP has continued to grow in popularity.  Why?  Because patients are realizing it is a very safe way to utilize your own body’s innate ability to heal and repair itself.  PRP begins with 1 tube of your own blood drawn and put through a centrifugation process.  The red blood cells are separated from the platelet rich plasma.  Since it is your own blood from which the PRP is derived, there is virtually no risk of rejection or allergic reaction.  This concentrated plasma has growth factors and nutrients needed to stimulate a stem cell response.  These stem cells help you to grow new collagen and blood vessels, repair and regenerate damaged skin, and help slow and reverse the signs of aging.

PRP has been a steady trend over 15 years for patients seeking less invasive procedures for facial rejuvenation.  It is also widely used by surgeons to accelerate wound healing, sports injuries, burns and as an adjunct to implant treatments in dentistry.

Cosmetically we use PRP to treat volume loss in the face, neck and hands.  It is excellent for treating wrinkles, crepiness, acne scarring and stretch marks.  Results show gradual improvement over the injected areas in just a few weeks, overall improvement in skin hydration, texture and tone.  New collagen and blood vessels begin to grow after 3-6 weeks, and reduction of fine lines, wrinkles and volume loss happens over next 3-6 months.

PRP with its abundant growth factors can also be used to stimulate hair growth.  PRP can stimulate the stem cells and other cells in the microenvironment of the hair follicle.  Inactive or sluggish follicles can be stimulated into an active growth phase.  The treatment not only promotes hair growth but also strengthens hair follicles.

Ideally, PRP whether cosmetically used for antiaging or to stimulate hair growth, should be done in a series of treatments.  A patient’s long-term goal and treatment plan should be discussed with and experienced provider.
