Dermal Fillers

Introduction

Introduction to Dermal Fillers

Injectable dermal fillers can enhance facial structures, such as the cheeks or lips, to give a fuller, more youthful appearance. With two convenient locations in Carmel and Greenwood, Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery is led by double-board-certified facial plastic surgeon Mark M. Hamilton, M.D., F.A.C.S., and offers dermal fillers and injectables with our advanced nurse injectors to men and women who live in and around Indianapolis, IN, as well as from across the Midwest, the nation, and abroad.

Injectable fillers and face fillers are minimally invasive alternatives to traditional cosmetic surgery, offering quicker treatments and reduced downtime. These treatments can address concerns such as volume loss, wrinkles, and facial contouring, offering customizable solutions tailored to individual needs.

It is important to have realistic expectations when considering dermal fillers and to review before-and-after photos to ensure the provider’s aesthetic aligns with your goals.

Types of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers come in a variety of formulations, each designed to address specific concerns and deliver unique benefits. The most widely used are hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvéderm and Restylane, which use a naturally occurring substance in the skin to attract moisture, add volume, and improve skin texture. These fillers are especially popular for their ability to deliver immediate, natural-looking results and their versatility in treating areas such as the lips, cheeks, and fine lines.

In addition to hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, there are biostimulatory fillers like Radiesse, which not only add volume but also stimulate collagen production for longer-lasting improvements in facial volume and skin quality. Other options include calcium-based fillers and poly-L-lactic acid fillers, each offering distinct advantages for specific treatment areas and aesthetic goals. By understanding the different types of dermal fillers available, patients can work with their provider to select the best option to achieve their desired look, whether it’s restoring lost volume, enhancing facial contours, or improving overall skin texture.

Men and women can visit Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery to have dermal fillers improve the following folds and wrinkles:

  • Vertical lip lines
  • Marionette lines
  • Corner lines
  • Smile lines (Nasolabial folds)

Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery offers the following dermal fillers:

  • Juvederm® Ultra XC and Juvederm® Ultra Plus XC

These fillers are designed to soften wrinkles and creases around the mouth, nose, and cheeks. Juvederm™ is more highly cross-linked, resulting in a longer-lasting, softer-feeling product compared to other fillers. Results typically last between nine and 12 months, with the effects of Juvéderm™ typically lasting 12 months. Additionally, Juvederm Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC are now FDA-approved for lip augmentation. The cost of Juvederm injections in Indianapolis is approximately $575 for the first syringe and $525 for each additional syringe.

  • Voluma®

Voluma® also uses Vycross™ technology. Vycross™ is a gel-like substance that can quickly permeate the skin, filling crevices and contours. Within a short period, this will result in firmer, more elastic skin. Voluma is approved to treat volume loss in the cheeks and midface.

  • Radiesse

Radiesse is a biostimulator that uses calcium hydroxylapatite to stimulate collagen production and restore volume. It is a smooth cream containing calcium microspheres suspended in a water-based gel carrier, used to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Radiesse is widely used for nasolabial folds, perioral folds, and cheek fullness, and can last 1-2 years. The injectable delivers an underlying microspheric structure to the deeper layers beneath the skin’s surface, lifting and supporting the outer layer. The structure also promotes collagen production, which helps build elasticity, suppleness, and volume. The collagen produced fills the microspheric lattice, making your skin smoother and giving it a younger appearance.

  • Restylane®

Restylane® restores the skin’s supply of HA, thereby promoting optimal hydration in the skin’s deepest layers. This increased hydration plumps your skin, improving its volume and reducing the appearance of common signs of aging. Restylane® typically lasts 4-6 months after injection.

  • Restylane® Lyft

The FDA has approved Restylane® Lyft to treat volume loss in the cheeks and nasolabial folds at the corners of the mouth. Unlike many other fillers that use pre-made doses, our advanced injector can calibrate each injection to meet each patient’s unique needs. Patients will immediately begin to notice results, with fuller skin and fewer wrinkles. In addition to volume expansion, this product helps increase skin elasticity, creating a more youthful appearance. Restylane® Lyft also increases skin hydration at each injection site, enhancing the initial effects.

  • Restylane Refyne and Defyne

These fillers are used to correct mild facial folds and wrinkles. It can also be injected for lip augmentation in patients over 21, as well as for treating vertical lip lines and fine lines on the lower face. This product is also ideal for those seeking to promote natural hydration and minimize swelling through a minimally invasive injection.

  • RHA® Fillers

The RHA Collection is a type of resilient hyaluronic acid filler designed to mimic the natural resilience of youthful skin. RHA® fillers are made with resilient hyaluronic acid (RHA) and are designed to respond to and adapt to your natural facial movements. RHA® fillers are primarily designed for application around the midface, nose, and mouth. These fillers may be effective for restoring lost volume by filling the nasolabial folds, marionette line, and laugh lines.

  • Sculptra

Sculptra is a semi-permanent biostimulator that gradually rebuilds the skin’s foundation as it stimulates collagen formation, lasting up to 2 years or longer. This filler is designed for patients who have lost skin volume and elasticity due to low collagen levels. Compared with many other fillers, Sculptra’s primary benefit is its long-lasting results. Patients who opt for alternative fillers may require additional maintenance injections as early as six months. Those who receive Sculptra injections, however, can enjoy their youthful new appearance for two years or longer.

  • Bellafill

Bellafill is the first and only FDA-approved permanent filler for the correction of wrinkles and folds.

What Are the Benefits of Dermal Fillers to Restore Volume?

Dermal fillers are a popular option for facial rejuvenation in Indianapolis, addressing various concerns such as volume loss, facial lines, and dynamic wrinkles. Dermal filler injections are designed to restore structure, smooth, and plump facial wrinkles and folds, providing results that last from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the filler. Injectable fillers can be used to treat facial lines caused by repeated facial movements, offering a natural, flexible appearance. We can also use dermal fillers to enhance a patient’s facial appearance by injecting them into acne scars or adding volume to the lips or cheeks. Unlike traditional cosmetic surgery, dermal fillers are minimally invasive and require reduced downtime. Treatments can be performed at either of our Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery offices in Carmel or Greenwood, IN, with minimal downtime. In many cases, dermal fillers are the first cosmetic procedure patients request to reduce early signs of aging on their face.

Dermal Fillers First Step

What’s the First Step?

To find out which dermal filler treatment is most appropriate for you, please schedule a consultation at either Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery location in Carmel, IN, or Greenwood, IN. One of our advanced injectors will meet with you to review your medical history and assess your skin condition. After a thorough evaluation, they will be able to make a recommendation for which dermal filler or combination of dermal fillers will best address your skin concerns. Our advanced injectors have extensive experience with facial anatomy and can offer expert advice on where to inject dermal fillers for optimal results. You will receive a customized dermal filler treatment plan, which you may begin that day or schedule for a later date.

What to Expect on the Day of Dermal Fillers Treatment

Patients typically arrive 30 minutes prior to a treatment session to apply a numbing cream. Before the dermal filler treatment begins, the patient’s skin is sanitized to eliminate pathogens. In some cases, our advanced injectors will smooth the skin tissue near the injection site with gentle fingertip strokes to assist in dispersing the dermal filler. All fillers contain a small amount of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, which helps numb the skin and underlying tissues, ensuring a comfortable and virtually painless treatment experience.

When treating delicate areas such as the lips and under the eyes, our injectors use extra precision due to the increased sensitivity and higher potential for bruising in these regions. The treated area may initially experience minor irregularities or increased sensitivity, but these effects are temporary and typically resolve quickly.

Once the procedure is complete, patients may resume normal activities at home or at work, and most experience minimal discomfort. Patients should refrain from strenuous activity or exposure to intense sunlight for 24 hours. If a patient experiences any problems after returning home, they should contact our office immediately for assistance.

Injection Site

The precise injection site for dermal fillers is carefully chosen based on the area being treated and the specific filler selected. Common treatment areas include the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lips, and cheeks, each requiring a tailored approach to achieve optimal results. Before the procedure, a topical anesthetic cream or ice packs may be applied to the injection site to ensure comfort and minimize any potential discomfort.

The practitioner’s skill and experience play a crucial role in determining the correct injection site and technique, thereby reducing the risk of side effects such as mild swelling or bruising. By targeting the appropriate areas with precision, fillers can effectively smooth lines, restore volume, and enhance facial features, all while maintaining a natural appearance. Patients can feel confident knowing that their treatment is customized to their unique facial anatomy and aesthetic goals.

Choosing the Right Dermal Filler

Selecting the ideal dermal filler is a personalized process that considers your unique aesthetic goals, skin type, and the severity of facial wrinkles or volume loss. Hyaluronic acid fillers are often favored for their ability to deliver natural-looking results and their flexibility in treating a range of concerns, from fine lines and deeper folds to lip enhancement. For those with more pronounced facial wrinkles or significant age-related volume loss, biostimulatory fillers like Radiesse may offer enhanced benefits by stimulating collagen production and providing longer-lasting improvements.

During your consultation, your provider will assess your skin, discuss your desired outcomes, and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This individualized approach ensures that the chosen filler addresses your specific concerns (whether it’s subtly enhancing facial features, restoring lost volume, or improving skin texture) while delivering results that look and feel natural. By working closely with an experienced practitioner, you can achieve your aesthetic goals with confidence and clarity.

Dermal Fillers
Recovery

After receiving one or more dermal filler injections, patients can return to normal activities but should avoid direct sunlight, heat, and strenuous exercise. Bruising may occur when small blood vessels are disrupted during the injection, particularly in delicate areas like the lips or under the eyes. Most patients notice an immediate improvement in their appearance, with tiny lines and deep folds around the mouth and near the nose reduced; full results are typically seen at the two-week mark. Patients should avoid rubbing the injection site for 24 hours to allow the facial skin to adjust and heal, and should also avoid touching or rubbing the treated area to minimize the risk of side effects.

Anti-Aging and Contouring

Dermal fillers are a cornerstone of modern anti-aging and facial contouring treatments, offering a non-surgical way to rejuvenate and enhance your appearance. Hyaluronic acid fillers are particularly effective for smoothing nasolabial folds, softening smile lines, and minimizing vertical lip lines, delivering immediate improvements that look natural and refreshed. By stimulating collagen production, these fillers not only restore facial volume but also improve skin texture and firmness, addressing concerns like sagging skin and thin lips.

Beyond wrinkle reduction, dermal fillers can be strategically used to contour and define facial features such as the cheeks, jawline, and chin, helping to create balanced, youthful facial contours. Whether your goal is to restore lost volume, improve fine lines, or subtly enhance your natural features, the wide range of available fillers allows for a customized approach that supports your unique aesthetic vision. With expert guidance, you can enjoy a radiant, natural-looking complexion and renewed confidence in your appearance.
