New neuromodulator alternatives are on the horizon and a collection of premium hyaluronic acid dermal fillers called RHA are now available

There is a longer acting neuromodulator product coming soon with potential product approval in the fourth quarter of 2020. When a biotechnology company called Revance set out to make a topical neuromodulator they learned the molecule was too large to be administered via this route. But instead they discovered something unanticipated – a longer acting neuromodulator. Botulinum toxin type A or Botox has been used for 30 years. For cosmetic use its effects are expected to last 3-4 months. There are currently 3 other neuromodulators FDA approved for treatment of glabellar lines or creases, listed in order of FDA approval: Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. In general, they take effect in 1-2 weeks and wear off in 3-4 months.

A new, premium, longer-lasting neuromodulator: DaxibotulinumtoxinA is slated to gain FDA approval some time in 2020. Once approved it is anticipated people treated with DaxibotulinumtoxinA may achieve glabellar or frown line correction in as few as two treatments a year. This is a big change to what we are accustomed to with the 4 currently available FDA approved neuromodulators typically requiring 3-4 visits a year. In the largest, single clinical trial evaluating glabellar lines, SAKURA 3, reported no serious adverse events related to treatment and a positive 6-month duration of action. Most common treatment related adverse effects were headache 3.3%, injection site pain 2.7%, injection site erythema 2.5%, and eyelid ptosis 0.9%. The sample size was 3,830 patients.

On the heels of this exciting news also comes a new collection of hyaluronic acid based fillers called RHA which stands for resilient hyaluronic acid. Now available in the US, RHA 2, 3, and 4 promise to deliver an HA filler that allows for dynamic movement of the face whilst correcting facial wrinkles and folds, with products that are both strong and flexible. RHA is made using a gentle manufacturing process with few chemical modifications so as to best mimic the natural HA found in the skin. All 3 products are approved in adults 22 years and older for correction of dynamic facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds. Results are estimated to last for up to 15 months. Dr. Hamilton’s practice is excited to be considered the first in the state of Indiana to be able to offer this new collection of premium resilient hyaluronic acid dermal fillers called RHA 2, 3, and 4.
