Understanding Revision Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty in Indianapolis, IN

The purpose of revision rhinoplasty is to correct a previous rhinoplasty surgery. Most people that have had a rhinoplasty are eligible to undergo a revision rhinoplasty. It is essentially the same procedure, but it is done in such a way to resolve an issue. There are a number of reasons to potentially consider a revision rhinoplasty procedure. Some people decide to get the procedure because they are unhappy with the results of the initial surgery, the underlying issue may not have been resolved properly during the first procedure, or the surgery itself may have created another problem altogether. Many people consider the rhinoplasty surgery in the first place because they would like to change the look of their nose for cosmetic reasons or they may have had an injury that damaged the structure of their nose and/or made it difficult to breath. A revision rhinoplasty procedure may be recommended if the patient has breathing problems that persisted after the first surgery or if they have started to have a breathing problem due to the initial surgery.

The rhinoplasty procedure itself is one of the most complicated plastic surgery procedures to perform. Secondary or revision rhinoplasty procedures are even more delicate as the same structures in the nose are present, but they have been altered and there will be some scar tissue present as well. The surgery can be done in an open or closed manner. A closed rhinoplasty is when all of the incisions are made inside of the nose, whereas the open rhinoplasty involves an incision along the columella, the area of skin that rests between the nostrils. Generally, the doctor will recommend an open rhinoplasty for more complicated cases in order to gain a better view of the structures in the nose, and this is often the case with revision rhinoplasty.

The goal of the revision rhinoplasty procedure is to improve upon your current nose, enabling you to breathe freely if you have breathing problems while providing you with a look that enhances your appearance. It is essential to have an honest and detailed discussion with your doctor before considering a revision rhinoplasty to understand specifically what you would like to change about your current nose if you are considering the surgery for cosmetic reasons. It is important to be realistic and discuss your expectations so that your doctor will be able to assess your needs. When you visit for a consultation for a revision rhinoplasty, it is very helpful if you provide an operative report of the initial surgery to give the doctor an understanding of what has already been done.
