Generally, the procedure itself is not painful since it’s performed under anesthesia. However, the recovery process is expected to bring some discomfort. Swelling, tightness, and sometimes bruising are common aspects of recovery; however, these symptoms are typically short-lived, resolving within a few weeks, and can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. You will begin your journey with a consultation at one of our Indianapolis offices, where Dr. Hamilton will review your concerns, goals, and anatomy to determine your personalized surgical plan. Then, you’ll need a pre-operative appointment, typically 2 to 3 weeks prior to your surgery, to review any last-minute details, address any questions, and ensure that you are cleared to proceed. You’ll have the surgery itself, then multiple follow-up visits to monitor your healing.

Since swelling initially hinders your results during recovery, you can expect to see the full results within six months. With that said, however, you will begin to gradually notice a change in appearance after about a week as the swelling begins to subside. The residual swelling typically lasts a few months, but you’ll still notice a difference until then.

Submentoplasty is often combined with other facial procedures to achieve a more comprehensive result and enhance overall facial balance. For more dramatic contouring and definition, it’s often paired with a chin implant or a lower facelift.
