In what ways is septoplasty different from rhinoplasty?

Question: In what ways is septoplasty different from rhinoplasty? Answer: A septoplasty is a procedure to straighten the septum inside the nose, correction of this often improves airflow allowing patients to breathe easier. Rhinoplasty is surgery to alter the outside structure of the nose. It is usually done to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose, but can also be done to improve breathing. Deciding which or if possibly both procedures are right for you begins with a consultation with a board certified facial plastic surgeon. Posted by Mark M. Hamilton M.D. FACS […]

Can rhinoplasty improve the round tip of my nose?

Question: The tip of my nose is tooround, Can this be corrected with rhinoplasty? Answer: Patients often feel the tip of their nose is too large or round. This can be corrected during rhinoplasty witha variety of techniques. Cartilage removal techniques can decrease the size of the lower nasal cartilages decreasing the size of the nasal tip. Suturing techniques can be used to narrow and refine the nasal cartilages as well. With healing, these sutures provide a permanent change in the appearance of the nasal tip. Patients with thicker skin may require more aggressive cartilage cutting techniques to get the definition they want. Your nasal surgeon […]

I am an African American female looking to have a nose job.

Question: I am an African American female looking to have a nose job.  I feel that my nose is too wide, but I am also scared that a generic small nose might look out of place on my face. Is there a chance of sort of ‘losing my ethnicity’ by having a rhinoplasty? Answer: Rhinoplasty involves reshaping the nose to achieve a more aesthetic appearance. For those with a nose typical for African Americans, this can involve procedures to narrow the nasal bridge, refine the nasal tip and narrow the nostrils. Most African Americans want to make changes that improve their appearance without sacrificing […]

Can nostrils be changed through surgery?

Question: I like everything about my nose but my nostrils which I think are too big. Can this alone be changed through surgery and how? Answer: Enlarged nostrils can be corrected during rhinoplasty (nasal surgery) through a variety of nostril narrowing techniques. Which exact technique is used depends on the shape of your nostril and where the excess lies. In general, techniques involve excision of redundant tissue along the floor or the lateral aspect of the nose. Carefully placed and executed excisions can leave a barely perceptible fine line scar. Reshaping your nostrils is possible with today’s rhinoplasty techniques; consulting with a board certified facial […]

Is there a particular age when most people start to consider getting a facelift?

Question: Is there a particular age when most people start to consider getting a facelift? Answer: Facelift surgery  addresses the extra skin on the neck as well as along the jaw line. It involves muscle tightening, skin removal and occasionally liposuction. There are no set guidelines for the “right time” for a facelift. There is some advantage to doing facelifts at a younger age in that the tissues tend to hold better and longer. That said, I generally tell patients that the right time is when you see changes that you are motivated to improve and I am confident that I can correct those […]

Can you correct my deviated septum and do a cosmetic nose procedure at the same appointment?

Question: Can you correct my deviated septum and do a cosmetic nose procedure at the same appointment? Answer: Rhinoplasty (nasal surgery) is most often done for cosmetic purposes to improve the look of a nose. Patients with difficulty breathing and a deviated septum will often combine this with cosmetic surgery. Frequently a rhinoplasty surgeon needs to harvest cartilage from the septum anyway. This allows one surgery, one recovery and often lessens the overall costs. Consult with Dr. Hamilton to see if you are a candidate for septal surgery as well as rhinoplasty […]

Could you please explain to me the similarities and differences of a facelift and a mini-facelift?

Question: Could you please explain to me the similarities and differences of a facelift and a mini-facelift? Answer: This is a common question, and unfortunately there are no rigid rules when it comes to the differences. That said, both a facelift and a mini-facelift are used to lift skin and tissues of the lower face and neck. Typically a facelift will involve extensive muscle work under the chin and in front of the ears, skin undermining and excision, sometimes liposuction, all from incisions both in front of and behind the ears and extending into the hairline. Mini-lifts typically are approached from more limited incisions, involve […]

I’ve been told by a doctor that I have thick nasal skin.

Question: I’ve been told by a doctor that I have thick nasal skin. How will this impact my rhinoplasty surgery? Answer: Thick skin can definitely affect rhinoplasty. The advantage of the thick skin is that it is more forgiving. Minor irregularities or assymetries will be less visible with thick skin. The disadvanatge is that it makes getting a well defined nasal tip more difficult – the thickness prevents the full affect of what has been done to the cartilage from being realized. An excellent rhinoplasty surgeon can adjust his techniques to compensate for some of this, but there are limitations. Consulting […]

Can a deviated septum be fixed during rhinoplasty surgery and how is this achieved?

Question: Can a deviated septum be fixed during rhinoplasty surgery and how is this achieved? Answer: Absolutely- A great time to correct breathing and other functional nose problems is at the same time as rhinoplasty. First off, the surgeon is working in the same area- some of the same incisions may be used. Many facial plastic surgeons use cartilage from the septum anyway during rhinoplasty. Doing so adds little to the procedure or the recovery. Second, if the septoplasty is covered by insurance, this can help defray the cosmetic costs. Rhinoplasty and septoplasty are often combined for many good reasons. Meeting with Dr. […]

I am having otoplasty to pin back my ears. I understand that I will have a head bandage after the surgery. How long do I have to keep the bandage on? When can I return to my normal exercise routine?

Question: I am having otoplasty to pin back my ears. I understand that I will have a head bandage after the otoplasty surgery. How long do I have to keep the bandage on? When can I return to my normal exercise routine? Answer: Dr. Hamilton does apply a dressing that is worn for the first 24 hours after otoplasty surgery. The next morning this is removed and the all of the post-operative care is reviewed. We ask patients to wear a head band of their choice over the ears as much as possible for the next two weeks – this helps support the new position […]
