Facelift vs. Mini Facelift: Which is Right for You?

The facelift and the mini facelift are similar procedures that are designed to tighten the facial skin and restore a more youthful look, but there are a number of factors that make them very different in nature. Here is some information to keep in mind when considering either procedure. The Facelift Procedure The facelift is also known as rhytidectomy. It is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the presence of sagging skin and tighten the muscles on the face to create a more youthful appearance. It is a more extensive procedure than the mini facelift procedure. The patient may require general anesthesia and […]

The American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery Conference in New Orleans

A study was presented by The American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery on the new facial filler from Allergan, Voluma. In studies for FDA approval, Voluma demonstrated results lasting up to two years with excellent safety. This new product will provide an excellent option for those wanting stronger cheek bones or to replace facial volume lost with aging or weight loss. Dr. Hamilton will be traveling to California in early November for training as he will be the first in Indiana and among the first in the US to be offering this new product. Fractional lasers continued to show benefits in […]

Blepharoplasty Incisions

Where are the incisions for eyelid surgery? In general, eyelid skin heals nicely with eyelid surgery.Incisions leave a fine line that is barely visible and easily camouflaged with make-up. Incisions for the upper eyelid are placed along the natural upper eyelid crease. With time, this incisionis covered by the upper eyelid fold. Incisions for the lower eyelids are placed just below the lashes and extend into one of the crow’s feet. Most patients already have a natural crease in this area and eyelash growth easily camouflages this area even without make-up. Common Concern of Bruising after Facial Plastic Surgery

Bruising is a common concern for patients after surgery. It prolongs recovery and delays getting back to activities and work. Make up can be applied typically after a week (and our staff assist with this) and does provide excellent camouflage, but patients for good reason would still like to minimize. Even more important to surgeons is bleeding- the biggest concern/ risk after most facial surgeries. Minor bleeding typically leads to bruising. Major bleeding can cause blood collections that require removal in the office or rarely back in surgery. Prevention of both is related. (more…) […]

Challenges in Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Augmentation of the dorsum (top) of the nose is often part of ethnic rhinoplasty (common in patients of Asian descent). The best way to augment this area is with natural tissues- either cartilage from the nose or rib or donated rib. For simplicity, some surgeons will use implant materials such as silicone. Unfortunately these are predisposed to infection and extrusion (moving and displacement). Because of this most facial plastic surgeons recommend using natural materials. An augmentation that was done with silastic material or is unsatisfactory can be corrected. This would involve a procedure where the silastic( or other synthetic implants) material would be removed […]

I’m 57 and my Mom is 76, How would a facelift be different for my Mom than for me?

Question: I’m 57 and my Mom is 76. We’re from Carmel and we would both like facelifts. How would the surgery be different for my Mom than for me? Answer: Age does play a role in facelifts. First off, the more we age, the more that typically needs to be done. A woman in her 50s is much more likely to get away with just having a mini-lift than a woman in her 80s. In addition, how long results last often depends on age. The tissues of a younger patient are more likely to hold the results of surgery for a longer period […]

Chin Implants a Growing Trend in Plastic Surgery

The chin augmentation procedure has experienced the greatest surge in cosmetic procedures that patients seek from plastic surgeons. The medical term for a chin implant surgery is mentoplasty or chin reshaping is genioplasty. Doctors suggest the popularity of social media and competitiveness at work play the greatest role in the recent spike in requests. In 2011, the number of chin implants performed increased more than Botox injections, liposuction treatments, and breast augmentations combined. Men reportedly received more chin implant surgeries than women, and patients aged 40 and above were the largest demographic of patients. Of all the areas of the […]

Candidate for a Finesse Rhinoplasty Indianapolis

Question: I am a 35 year old male from Greenwood and have a wide nasal bridge. Am I a good candidate for a finesse rhinoplasty? Answer: Rhinoplasty can be used to correct many nasal features, including a wide nasal bridge. This is typically corrected with precise bony cuts along the lateral side of the nose. Once these are created, the surgeon can narrow the nasal bones and thus narrow the nasal bridge. Determining if you are a good candidate for nasal bridge narrowing and rhinoplasty begins with a consultation with a board certified facial plastic surgeon. How long is a typical chin implant surgery? What is the implant made of?

Question: How long is a typical chin implant surgery? What is the implant made of? Answer: Chin augmentation typically takes around an hour or less to perform. There are a wide variety of materials that can be used for chin augmentation including mersilene mesh, silicone, medpore and Gortex. My personal choice is typically mersilene mesh. It a made from a nylon mesh material that can be individually contoured to each patient’s needs. The material is soft and pliable providing a natural result that patients appreciate the implant can’t be felt once completely healed. The body’s tissue grow into the implant over time allowing […]

Can you correct the tip of my nose, which is too round, with rhinoplasty?

Question: The tip of my nose is too round. Can this be corrected with rhinoplasty? Answer: Patients often feel the tip of their nose is too large or round. This can be corrected during rhinoplasty with a variety of techniques. Cartilage removal techniques can decrease the size of the lower nasal cartilages decreasing the size of the nasal tip. Suturing techniques can be used to narrow and refine the nasal cartilages as well. With healing, these sutures provide a permanent change in the appearance of the nasal tip. Patients with thicker skin may require more aggressive cartilage cutting techniques to get the definition they want. Your […]
