New Study Indicates Smokers May Appear Slightly Older

Smokers’ Skin May Age Faster – Reuters (10/29, Pittman) reports a recent identical twin study indicates smokers will likely develop bags under their eyes and wrinkles around their lips earlier than non-smokers. Judges unaware of which twin smoked thought the smoker looked older 57% of the time, a pattern maintained when both twins smoked but one began earlier than the other. However, the difference in most cases was not substantial. For years Dr.Hamilton has discussed with patients his and their two biggest enemies: the sun and smoking. Now a recent study regarding twins adds further evidence that smoking accelerates the signs […]

Can I have the lines and wrinkles around my lips treated at the same time?

Question:  I’m from Indianapolis and I’d like to plump up my lips with some type of injectable filler. Can I have the lines and wrinkles around my lips treated at the same time? Answer:  Injectable fillers are a great option for lip rejuvenation.  This can include augmentation of the lips to give a fuller look, to softening of fine lines and wrinkles around the lips (smokers lines). A wide variety of filler options exist for lip enhancement:  Juvederm is our first choice because of the natural feel it provides and its reversibility. Dr. Hamilton […]

Common Concern of Bruising after Facial Plastic Surgery

Bruising is a common concern for patients after surgery. It prolongs recovery and delays getting back to activities and work. Make up can be applied typically after a week (and our staff assist with this) and does provide excellent camouflage, but patients for good reason would still like to minimize. Even more important to surgeons is bleeding- the biggest concern/ risk after most facial surgeries. Minor bleeding typically leads to bruising. Major bleeding can cause blood collections that require removal in the office or rarely back in surgery. Prevention of both is related. (more…) […]

Skin Care Products: What is Their Shelf Life?

Products designed to promote skin health often contain active ingredients or other additives that will remain effective for a certain amount of time. The shelf life of the skin care items that are part of your routine will vary depending on what the product contains – or doesn’t contain – as organic products often lack preservatives that inhibit the growth of mold and bacteria; how it is packaged since darker jars and bottles protect from sun damage and air-tight tubes seal out air; and where in your home the product is stored. Typically, when skin care items are exposed to […]

Cosmeceuticals: Do They Really Treat the Signs of Aging?

Advances in skin care have led to the development of cosmeceuticals that can be thought of as a hybrid creation, consisting of part cosmetic and part pharmaceutical ingredients. The products are typically sold in the offices of plastic surgeons and skin care specialists who understand how the ingredients function topically on the skin. Cosmeceuticals are not controlled like other chemical ingredients because the label is not formally accepted by the Food and Drug Administration. (more…) […]

Nose Reconstruction Insurance for Nasal Trauma

Question: My nose has been changed because of a previous sports injury. It is twisted, has a hump and I have trouble breathing throught it. Will insurance help cover this? Answer: With summer and increased outdoor activities, nasal trauma is more common. Nasal fractures can lead to problems breathing and deformities of the outside of the nose. Open reduction of nasal and septal fractures can correct both of these. Most insurance plans do cover correction of nasal and septal fractures. After your consult with Dr. Hamilton, our office will call your insurance company to verify coverage and review your benefits. The first step […]
