When using grafts for a nose job, how are they secured?

By Dr. Mark Hamilton

Question:
When using grafts for a nose job, how are they secured so that they don’t move around?

Answer:
Reshaping of the nose, rhinoplasty, often involves placement of cartilage grafts. These can be for functional purposes such as improving breathing or for cosmetic effect. Grafts are secured either by placing them in small pockets or by suturing. When precisely placed pockets are created for specific grafts, the tightness of the area prevents initial displacement. Oftentimes, sutures can be utilized to secure the grafts into position. Whatever the method, long term tissue ingrowth further prevents movement of the grafts. Cartilage grafting can be an integral part of rhinoplasty. Meeting with a board certified facial plastic surgeon is the first step to determining if rhinoplasty is right for you.
