Advances in skin care have led to the development of cosmeceuticals that can be thought of as a hybrid creation, consisting of part cosmetic and part pharmaceutical ingredients. The products are typically sold in the offices of plastic surgeons and skin care specialists who understand how the ingredients function topically on the skin. Cosmeceuticals are not controlled like other chemical ingredients because the label is not formally accepted by the Food and Drug Administration.

The opportunities for in office treatments has expanded exponentially in the last 10-15 years.
Most are familiar with Botox as well as collagen fillers of the past. Newer fillers offer the opportunity for
injections that are longer lasting (up to 1-2 years) and no longer require skin testing.
Hyaluronic acid is the component of most commonly used fillers today. While these are long acting(up to one year), well tolerated, and reversible, they are not permanent. (more…)

We have now being using Belotero for several weeks and are seeing good results. Belotero is very similar to other hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane. Belotero claims to have a unique advantage due to its patented cross-linking technology used in its formulation. This is reported to help create a thinner product which fills more uniformly and allows it to be used more superficially.
Our initial use of the product has shown it to be very smooth in filling. I have noticed that it can be used superficially with a natural result and no skin discoloration or Tyndall […]
Question:
I am in Indianapolis and interested in getting a long lasting injectable filler….
Answer:
The options for injectable fillers continue to grow, and our standard hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero) can be expected to last up to a year. For those looking for a longer lasting option, Artefill can be a great choice.
Artefill is the only FDA approved long lasting (possibly permanent) filler in the US. The US has benefited from two decades of experience with this product in Europe; the US version is the third generation. Artefill provides long term correction of treated areas. Although it cannot be used in […]

The chin augmentation procedure has experienced the greatest surge in cosmetic procedures that patients seek from plastic surgeons. The medical term for a chin implant surgery is mentoplasty or chin reshaping is genioplasty. Doctors suggest the popularity of social media and competitiveness at work play the greatest role in the recent spike in requests. In 2011, the number of chin implants performed increased more than Botox injections, liposuction treatments, and breast augmentations combined. Men reportedly received more chin implant surgeries than women, and patients aged 40 and above were the largest demographic of patients. Of all the areas of the […]
Question:
What is the difference between Botox and injectable fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm? What is the best option for minimizing lines in my forehead and neck?
Answer:
Botox is a muscle relaxant. In general it works best on the upper half of the face and typically last for 3-4 months. Botox is a great option for softening lines in the forehead. Injectable fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm work by “filling in” lines and wrinkles. It in general does better on the lower half of the face and typically last 9-12 months. The neck area is generally not ideal for either, […]
Question:
How does Dysport compare to Botox? Do they perform the same and last the same amount of time?
Answer:
Most facial plastic surgeons see very little difference between the two products. There is a tendency for Dysport to work a little quicker and diffuse from its injection point more. Neither has been a clinical factor in my practice. Studies can be found for each product showing longer duration, but most clinicians have found little to no difference. My own experience has been, as with any cosmetic treatment, each patient responds differently to every product. Deciding which is right for you […]
Question:
Are chemical peels still used today? You don’t hear much about them anymore. What are they good for treating and are other things like injectables fillers better?
Answer:
Although chemical peels do not get the same press as newer cosmetic treatments such as lasers and Injectable fillers, they are a proven technique. Chemical peels provide different degrees of skin resurfacing depending on their depth. Superficial peels can be used to “freshen up” the skin with minimal downtime. Medium depth peels can provide more results, such as getting rid of brown spots and improving skin texture. With better skin improvement comes […]
