Is Natural Lip Augmentation Possible in Indianapolis, IN?

When patients come in for a consultation for facial rejuvenation, one of their top concerns is that they want the results to look natural. This is especially important with the lips. Many patients have seen stars or media personalities who have taken their lip injections to the extreme, and this is what most patients think about when they consider a lip enhancement.

The reality at Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery, however, is vastly different from what people see in Hollywood. Most of Dr. Hamilton’s patients want a very subtle enhancement that looks natural. Creating an aesthetically pleasing, slightly fuller lip is possible for most of Dr. Hamilton’s patients. For a small percentage, the lip structure does limit what can be achieved. But for the majority of patients, the choice of how they want their lips to look is an extremely personal decision.

During a consultation, Dr. Hamilton will discuss a patient’s goals and his or her lip anatomy with them. Injections are typically done with a hyaluronic acid filler (such as Juvederm®or Restylane®) that is naturally found in the body and is very well tolerated. If a patient is concerned about a filler being overdone, it is possible to under treat the lips and then re-examine the results in a few weeks. For patients who desire a fuller, more dramatic lip augmentation, it is possible to achieve such a result.

The best part of lip augmentation is that the fillers are reversible. If a patient is unsatisfied with his or her results, Dr. Hamilton can inject a small amount of reversal agent to undo the fillers.

If you are considering lip injections, but are concerned about them looking natural, consult with Dr. Hamilton or one of our experienced nurse injectors to explore your options for natural lip augmentation.

Restylane® Lyft is the First Hyaluronic Acid Filler FDA-Approved for the Hands

As with the rest of our body, our skin loses elasticity and fat as we age. This results in sagging skin and a gaunt, mature appearance that many consider unflattering. Restylane® Lyft is an injectable Hyaluronic Acid gel used to correct volume loss in the hands. There is instant improvement in the appearance of the hands after this treatment, with results lasting up to 6-months.

Restylane® Lyft is injected just underneath the skin, above the connective tissue that covers the tendons, bones, blood vessels, and nerves. You can see the results immediately and the procedure results in a natural-looking, more youthful hand.

This is an in-office procedure with no down time associated. It is recommended that one 1-ml syringe be placed in each hand to see the best results. There may be some associated bruising and mild swelling post-treatment, but side effects are typically minimal.

Post-care instructions should include applying cold compresses to site immediately after treatment to reduce swelling, and to avoid touching the treated area for 6 hours following treatment to prevent injury. You can wash your hands immediately after treatment, but exercise should be postponed until 24 hours post-injection to prevent any delayed adverse effects, such as bruising.

Lip Aging 101: Advice from Dr. Mark M. Hamilton

Dermal Fillers and Injectables in Indianapolis, IN

As stated many times before, as we age we lose volume in our skin and face; this includes the lips as well. Each birthday you may notice less than full lips, lip lines and a lack of definition. Research and the mirror tell us that lips lose volume and even the amount of “red” showing. This is the degradation of collagen and elastin and a decrease in moisture levels. Other factors can affect the appearance of the lips are excessive sun exposure, genetics and smoking.

Fillers to Fight Lip Aging

Fillers can help to temporarily correct the signs of aging and produce a “more pouty,” youthful appearing lip. Adding a soft tissue filler to your lip can provide the fullness and replace the volume lost throughout the years, without making it obvious that you had a procedure performed. Fine lines will be filled, some color will be turned up and a fuller lip can be achieved. The longevity of filler depends on product used and your metabolism. Typical filler duration after injection ranges from six to 18 months.

Our Recommended Lip Fillers

Juvederm® Vollure and Restylane® Silk are products used to provide a subtle fullness to restore the volume lost over the years. Juvederm® Ultra and Juvederm® Ultra Plus can be used to create fuller more robust lips. Swelling and fullness are much more apparent with these products but do typically subside after a couple of days.

For fine lines we recommend Juvederm® Vollure or Juvederm® Volbella. These two fillers provide a soft correction of lines without the discoloration or swelling that may occur with some other products.

What Happens at a Lip Appointment?

Appointments can be scheduled with either Dr. Hamilton or one of our experienced nurse injectors. We will meet with you, discuss your medical history, medication history and consult with you on your personal needs and wants. The area to be injected will be numbed with a topical ointment, ice will be utilized to minimize the risk of bruising, and the injection will take place, providing immediate results. Often we will save a small amount of product to be injected later after swelling has resolved allowing re-evaluation of the results (typically two weeks).

It is a good idea to refrain from any blood thinning agents prior to injection as these products tend to increase your risk of bleeding and bruising during the procedure. These products include: Aspirin, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Advil, Naproxen, Vitamins and Fish Oil. Click here for a full list.

All the lip injection products that we use are created from hyaluronic acid, a chemical natural to your skin and your body. In addition, because of this, these products can be reversed if the results are not satisfactory. Risks of lip augmentation include bruising, bleeding, obvious swelling and asymmetry.
