Introduction

Introduction to BOTOX® & other Neuromodulators

Cosmetic procedures come and go in popularity, but BOTOX® and wrinkle relaxers have remained popular for many years. Wrinkles and fine lines that aren’t affected much by other procedures generally respond very well to injections of BOTOX® when a reputable and skilled CANS-certified, advanced injector delivers them.

With two convenient locations in Carmel and Greenwood, Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery is pleased to offer this safe and effective treatment to residents of the Indianapolis area, as well as from across the Midwest, the nation, and abroad.

What Are Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators are injectable cosmetic products used to improve the signs of aging in the face. In most cases, they reduce wrinkles and fine lines that are normal consequences of aging. They provide a softer and more youthful appearance and have also been used as a treatment for trapezius knots (TrapTox) and migraines.

Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery offers the following neuromodulators:

  • BOTOX®

Botox® is the most well-known neuromodulator. It has been safely used for years to improve signs of aging by reducing fine lines and wrinkles. For most patients, its effects last 3-4 months.

  • Daxxify®

Daxxify® is a peptide-powered injectable cosmetic neurotoxin, Daxibotulinumtoxica. The on-label approval is for glabella lines, but it also has many off-label uses. It is commonly used to treat fine lines and wrinkles around the forehead and eyes, and can be used on the lower face as well. Patients are getting longer-lasting results, usually 4-5 months from Daxxify®. This is a promising possibility, which would allow patients to be treated 2-3 times a year instead of 3-4 times a year as with other neurotoxins.

  • Dysport®

Dysport® is a relatively new treatment that can temporarily provide a dramatic improvement in the appearance of wrinkles. Although the terms, Dysport® and Botox®, are often used interchangeably, there are a few notable differences between the two. Dysport® generally begins working more quickly than Botox®. From our observation, most people notice some sort of effect in less than one day following treatment. Botox® typically takes five to seven days to begin taking effect. Additionally, dosages and pricing differ between Dysport® and Botox®. While it might take one unit dosage of Botox® to treat a patient, it would likely take two to three times that unit dosage of Dysport® to achieve the same effect. However, Dysport® and Botox® are quite similar in value and price in the long run. Lastly, it has been found that Dysport® has a tendency to spread more than Botox®. This means that it’s technically possible that the solution could radiate out and affect more than the target area. This is kept in mind while we administer the treatment.

  • Xeomin®

Xeomin®, like other brand-name neurotoxins, is used to soften facial wrinkles. It can be used to relax frown lines, forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and other wrinkles caused by facial expressions. The main difference between it and the other neurotoxins is its unique formulation, which is touted to prevent the possibility of decreased effectiveness with long-term use. The contraction and retraction of facial muscles cause facial expressions. With time, these contractions can form frown lines and other facial wrinkles as a result of aging skin. Once Xeomin® has been injected, it will block the chemical reactions necessary to cause the contractions, effectively softening facial lines. In clinical studies, Xeomin® was just as, if not more, successful in treating and softening these facial anomalies.

BOTOX® & Wrinkle Relaxers First Step

BOTOX® Consultation

During your consultation appointment, a nurse injector will review your medical history, address your questions and concerns, and describe the procedure to you. It’s recommended that you ask any questions you have now to understand better how BOTOX® works. If you are determined to be a suitable candidate for BOTOX®, you will receive a customized cosmetic treatment plan to address your areas of concern. You may begin your treatment plan on the same day or schedule a more convenient time.

BOTOX® Procedure Preparation

Notifying our advanced injectors if you’ve received other types of injections within the three months preceding your appointment is essential. You should also avoid using medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and other drugs that thin the blood prior to your treatment, as these may increase bleeding and bruising risks.

How Is BOTOX® Administered?

Our advanced injectors will use an ultrafine hypodermic needle to deliver BOTOX® into the muscles of your face. The number of injection units you receive depends on the number and severity of wrinkles and lines you want to treat. For most patients, the benefits of this in-office procedure will last three to four months before wearing off. At this time, patients normally return for another treatment.

BOTOX® Recovery

After your BOTOX® procedure is complete, avoid rubbing your face harshly and refrain from engaging in vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours. You’ll still be able to smile or frown. Using a cold compress on the treatment areas and taking a pain reliever can help control any post-treatment discomfort you may experience. You should also avoid sleeping on your stomach, sides, or any other position that might expose your face to prolonged pressure.

Post-Procedure Neurotoxin Instructions

After Your Neurotoxin Treatment:

  • Refrain from massages or facials for 24 hours.
  • Do not wear a headband or hat with a band that goes across your forehead if you have had injections between the brows or in the forehead.
  • For 24 hours following injections, refrain from aerobic exercise that greatly increases your heart rate (running, swimming, bicycling, etc.). Walking or other low-impact forms of exercise are fine.
  • For 24 hours after the procedure, avoid massaging or manipulating the injection sites. Washing your face and applying makeup is fine. Please avoid using a Clarisonic facial cleanser, having a facial, putting your face in a massage cradle, or lying face down in a chiropractor’s chair.
  • For 24 hours following the injection, avoid using ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oil supplements, or vitamin E.
  • If bruising appears, apply ice to the area for 15 minutes every hour to decrease bruising.
  • The most common side effect of Neurotoxin injections is headache. You may use Tylenol to relieve this. If you are a chronic headache sufferer and take prescription headache medication, you may take it as prescribed by your doctor.
  • The neurotoxin will gradually take effect over 7-10 days, with the optimum result achieved at 2 weeks.  If this is your first Neurotoxin injection, we recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment 2 weeks after your injection.
