When patients come in for a consultation for facial rejuvenation, one of their top concerns is that they want the results to look natural. This is especially important with the lips. Many patients have seen stars or media personalities who have taken their lip injections to the extreme, and this is what most patients think about when they consider a lip enhancement.
The reality at Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery, however, is vastly different from what people see in Hollywood. Most of Dr. Hamilton’s patients want a very subtle enhancement that looks natural. Creating an aesthetically pleasing, slightly fuller lip is possible for most of Dr. Hamilton’s patients. For a small percentage, the lip structure does limit what can be achieved. But for the majority of patients, the choice of how they want their lips to look is an extremely personal decision.
During a consultation, Dr. Hamilton will discuss a patient’s goals and his or her lip anatomy with them. Injections are typically done with a hyaluronic acid filler (such as Juvederm®or Restylane®) that is naturally found in the body and is very well tolerated. If a patient is concerned about a filler being overdone, it is possible to under treat the lips and then re-examine the results in a few weeks. For patients who desire a fuller, more dramatic lip augmentation, it is possible to achieve such a result.
The best part of lip augmentation is that the fillers are reversible. If a patient is unsatisfied with his or her results, Dr. Hamilton can inject a small amount of reversal agent to undo the fillers.
If you are considering lip injections, but are concerned about them looking natural, consult with Dr. Hamilton or one of our experienced nurse injectors to explore your options for natural lip augmentation.
For years we have been using Juvederm Ultra XC for lip augmentation with excellent results. So it is no surprise that it recently received FDA approval for use in the lips and perioral areas in adults over 21. This does, however, confirm for all of us the safety of lip enhancement with Juvederm Ultra XC. In addition, there are other interesting findings that I would not have expected. When it comes to nonsurgical cosmetic treatments, especially those involving injectable fillers, your satisfaction with the results may come down to something as simple as the quality of the products used. If your plastic surgeon has a wide range of brand name dermal fillers, determining which of these products will give you the best results can be an overwhelming feat. Of course, your plastic surgeon will make recommendations for the products that may best suit you and what benefits they can offer. Before your appointment, however, educate yourself on the top-ranked dermal filler brand, Juvederm, and see what makes it stand out from the crowd.
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Of course, it is important to understand what dermal fillers are and what they are used for. If you’re unfamiliar with injectable filler procedures, these are performed as a nonsurgical treatment to add volume to specific areas of the face. Delivered through an injection directly into the target area, dermal fillers are comprised of biocompatible materials that stay beneath the skin until the body can break them down. Injectable treatments are temporary, usually lasting from as little as four months to as long as a year, depending on the product used. Dermal fillers are primarily used as an anti-aging tool as the added volume gives the skin a smoother appearance and diminishes the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles. This procedure can be performed nearly anywhere on the face, such as the cheeks, the chin, between the eyebrows, on the outside corners of the eyes, and in the area between the mouth and nose. In some cases, dermal fillers are also used to plump the lips and cheeks to restore depleted volume and add contour to the face.
