Patients who struggle with hair loss can once again enjoy a full head of natural hair by using a safe method of hair restoration known as PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma). Located in Carmel and Greenwood, Mark M. Hamilton, M.D., F.A.C.S., a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, is proud to offer this ground-breaking treatment to the men and women of Indianapolis at Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery.
There are many options for hair restoration including medical treatments such as Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minoxidil), as well as surgical hair transplantation. A relatively new option is platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Several studies have demonstrated the benefits of PRP for both men and women experiencing hair loss. PRP is made from your own blood and is injected directly into the scalp. It is rich in growth factors that have been shown to grow and thicken hair. Unlike some other treatments for hair loss, PRP has virtually no risks or side effects.
How Does PRP Work?
PRP has been used for several decades in many areas of medicine, including oral surgery, orthopedics and plastic surgery. PRP has been demonstrated to have substantial benefits in wound healing and tissue regeneration. The exact mechanism of how PRP works in hair loss is still not fully understood.
PRP contains high concentrations of platelets as well as their associated growth factors. Some of these, such as the Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), are associated with hair growth. It is believed that these growth factors from PRP are the source of its effects on hair. Studies have shown that patients who have received PRP have increased the thickness of individual hairs and a higher density of hair follicles.
What is PRP for Hair Restoration?
The use of PRP for addressing hair loss involves using platelet-rich plasma to trigger the body’s own hair growth processes. This treatment can be done as an outpatient procedure and doesn’t require any downtime for recovery. Because it’s only minimally invasive, patients also will not experience any discomfort, unlike with other procedures.
Benefits of PRP for Hair Restoration
People often choose to receive PRP treatment for hair restoration because it’s a fast and easy treatment. It can also have significant benefits, such as:
- Virtually no risk of adverse reactions.
- Stimulates hair follicle growth.
- May reduce shrinkage of the hair follicles, known as miniaturization.
- Gives good results to both genders.
- Benefits become gradually apparent, thereby reducing the chances that other people will notice you’ve had a procedure.
How is PRP for Hair Restoration Performed?
Using PRP to promote hair growth is a quick outpatient treatment that only takes about one hour. First, Dr. Hamilton takes a small sample of your blood and places it in a test tube. Next, the sample is placed in a centrifuge, which rotates at high speeds to separate the platelets and plasma from the other substances in the blood, which produces the platelet-rich plasma. Your scalp will be prepared, and then the PRP is injected into your scalp where your hair is the thinnest. Right after, Dr. Hamilton may use a microneedling procedure to produce minute wounds to your scalp, which will encourage the additional release of growth factors in the PRP, thereby increasing its effects on the cellular activity surrounding the hair follicles.
PRP is typically done in a series of 3 to 4 treatments repeated monthly. If patients receive substantial growth, it is recommended that touch up treatments be done every 6 to 12 months. Studies are still being done to determine the optimal dosing schedule and how often these treatments should be repeated.
PRP can also be done as part of a hair transplant procedure. Typically, the grafts are bathed in the PRP while they are awaiting implantation. Prior to graft implantation, some of the PRP is injected into recipient areas of the scalp.
Preparing for PRP for Hair Restoration
Thoroughly wash your hair prior to your appointment to make sure your scalp is clean. Do not use any styling products afterward.
Recovery from PRP for Hair Restoration
You may notice that your scalp is somewhat numb immediately afterward the PRP procedure, but this should subside on its own in a few hours. During this time, you can go about your normal routine. Patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort after the PRP procedure. These symptoms should resolve within a few days.
How much does PRP for Hair Restoration Cost in Indianapolis?
The cost depends on the degree of severity of your thinning hair and the kind of results you desire. For this reason, the cost varies for each patient and will be discussed during your consultation appointment. Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery seeks to make hair restoration procedures available and affordable for everyone. To accomplish this, we offer financing options and accept cash, major credit cards and personal checks for PRP Therapy.
Is PRP for Hair Restoration Right for Me?
You might be a good candidate for PRP if you have poor hair quality, diminishing volume, decreasing hair coverage or increased hair loss. However, it’s strongly recommended to have a full medical evaluation to determine any possible cause of the hair loss.
For many years, PRP has been a successful treatment in other areas of medicine. The choice to undergo PRP is a personal one and it’s important that you only make this decision after thorough and careful research, talking with your doctor about your suitability for the procedure and considering whether it fits your unique needs. PRP is a safe and natural treatment because it uses healthy cells from your body and places them where they’re most needed. You cannot contract an infection from other people because the treatment uses only your own cells and these are never changed in any way. Your immune system also cannot reject them.
What to Expect During your Consultation
Dr. Hamilton will closely examine your scalp and hair to decide if you would be a good candidate for PRP. You’ll also need to fill out a comprehensive health history to make sure that there are no other problems that might result in complications.
