OcuMend® Gel Pads in Indianapolis, INThe major innovation for aesthetic procedures in recent years is minimally invasive or non-invasive treatments with little or no downtime. The subsiding of bruises and swelling are what necessitates downtime, so anything that can be done to minimize inflammation and bleeding will reduce the amount of time patients need to spend recuperating.

For those considering a facial injection procedure, surgery, or other facial treatment, Dr. Hamilton has always recommended a few things to avoid as they may increase bruising or bleeding at the surgery or injection sites and impede recovery.

  • Two weeks before procedure
    • Avoid: fish oil, garlic, ginger, melatonin, Vitamin E, and smoking
    • Take: Arnica montana herbal supplement
  • One week before procedure
    • Stop taking aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen (NSAIDs)
    • If you can, stop blood thinners like Plavix or any medicine that can affect your blood including blood pressure and cholesterol reducing medication

OcuMend for Healing and Recovery

A new addition to these recommendations is OcuMend, introduced to the market in 2012, and to our practice earlier this year. OcuMend is a gel pad that contains two active ingredients: Arnica montana and Ledum palustre. These are herbal remedies derived from flowering plants that have been used for centuries. In fact, our office has long recommended Arnica to our patients to reduce swelling and bruising.

A Unique Formulation Combined With a Unique Delivery

OcuMend pads are unique because they are formulated 50 times stronger than other Arnica creams and tablets available over the counter. Ledum is also added as an anti-inflammatory compound. They work together, though in different ways, by delivering their active ingredients directly to the surgical or injection site.

Usage in Detail

Following a cosmetic procedure, including facial surgery by Dr. Hamilton, or the application of an injectable dermal filler, by the doctor or one of his Nurse Injectors, the healing pad is applied to the treatment site. The healing benefits of OcuMend pads may spread as far as 6 inches from the area of placement. They provide a cooling sensation to the skin, and once removed they leave no sticky residue.

It should be noted that the pads are only effective for six to eight hours after placement and that wearing them longer won’t increase the dosage. Dr. Hamilton recommends that patients wear the OcuMend pads for six hours after treatment and then reapply fresh ones before bed.

If the patient is unable to wear the OcuMend pads for the six hours just after treatment, Dr. Hamilton assures that a good dose can be delivered by wearing them in the office for 15 to 20 minutes. This would be followed by applying them before bed.

Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery is one of a select few practices in the area, and around the country, that provides treatment with OcuMend healing gel pads.
