What is the difference between Botox and injectable fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm?

Posted October 31, 2011 2:42 pm by Dr. Mark M. Hamilton, M.D., FACS in Botox/Dysport,Injectable Fillers,Juvederm,Restylane,Wrinkles

Question:
What is the difference between Botox and injectable fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm? What is the best option for minimizing lines in my forehead and neck?

Answer:
Botox is a muscle relaxant. In general it works best on the upper half of the face and typically last for 3-4 months. Botox is a great option for softening lines in the forehead. Injectable fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm work by “filling in” lines and wrinkles. It in general does better on the lower half of the face and typically last 9-12 months. The neck area is generally not ideal for either, although the vertical bands the run up the neck can be treated with Botox. Both Botox and injectable fillers can be done in the office with minimal downtime; both have greatly expanded are options for treating early facial aging in the office.

How does Dysport compare to Botox?

Posted October 4, 2011 11:45 am by Dr. Mark M. Hamilton, M.D., FACS in Botox/Dysport

Question:
How does Dysport compare to Botox? Do they perform the same and last the same amount of time?

Answer:
Most facial plastic surgeons see very little difference between the two products. There is a tendency for Dysport to work a little quicker and diffuse from its injection point more. Neither has been a clinical factor in my practice. Studies can be found for each product showing longer duration, but most clinicians have found little to no difference. My own experience has been, as with any cosmetic treatment, each patient responds differently to every product. Deciding which is right for you begins with a consultation with your facial plastic surgeon.

How much Botox Will I Need?

Posted July 8, 2009 12:55 pm by Dr. Mark M. Hamilton, M.D., FACS in Botox/Dysport,Injectable Fillers,Wrinkles
Many patients ask us this question and it really depends on the patient and their aesthetic goals.
Most patients just would like to soften their expression, especially if they are heavy “frowners”. For most patients, 25 units of Botox will relax this frown lines (vertical lines between the brows). Others have deep crows feet ( lines around the corners of the mouth) with expression and depending on the patient anywhere from 10 to 20 units can be used here. Finally forehead lines respond well to Botox and this typically requires 10-15 units. Brow lifting can be achieved with a combination of these and a few units in the lateral eyebrow.
Botox is an art and patient doctor discussion is critical. Dr. Hamilton individualizes each treatment and stresses follow up to achieve the best results.
We have a very high return rate because of our emphasis on comfortable treatments with minimal bruising and great results.
